How to Hire an Assistant Project Manager in Construction

Assistant Project Managers are often the future PM pipeline of a General Contractor. The best APM hires can take ownership of documentation, procurement, RFIs, submittals and subcontractor coordination while developing toward full project responsibility.

Hire for trajectory as well as current experience

An APM may have come through a Project Engineer, Project Coordinator or Assistant PM route. Titles matter less than the responsibility behind them. Look for evidence that the candidate is already taking ownership rather than simply processing paperwork.

Ask what they personally manage, which meetings they attend, whether they track submittals and RFIs, how involved they are in buyout and change management, and whether they have direct subcontractor contact.

Match the project environment

An APM working on large ground-up commercial projects will develop differently from someone focused on interiors or small renovation work. Neither is inherently stronger; the question is which environment aligns with your backlog and progression plan.

Assess systems and communication

Construction management software, document control and written communication are important at APM level because the role touches a high volume of project information. However, do not hire only for Procore, Autodesk Build or another platform. Systems can be taught. Construction judgment, accountability and communication are harder to manufacture.

Give strong APMs a visible path

Candidates at this level are often evaluating how quickly they can grow. If your company can offer defined exposure to cost control, client meetings and progressively larger packages, explain that during the interview. A clear development path can be as important as the initial title.
